Celebrating Your Remarkable Self
Carol Parsons

Who are you at work?  Are you different than who you are outside of work?  What makes you successful in different environments?  Participants will have an opportunity to explore their own strengths and uniqueness in this fun and comfortable session with campus colleagues.

Conflict Resolution for the Work Place
Lupe Navarro-Garcia

Conflict is an everyday part of our lives and patterns may emerge in how we handle it.  Sometimes these patterns help and sometimes they lock us into a coping cycle with negative impacts.  Come and learn about various coping styles and how to de-personalize conflict situations at work for maximum results in resolution and in the reduction of the stress associated with difficult situations.  The workshop will be interactive allowing participants to put into practice the information presented.

Discovering Career Growth, Learning and Development Opportunities at UCSB - Melinda Crawford and Diane Hollems

Are you interested in learning new skills, approaches, or attitudes?  Would you like to develop your leadership potential?  Are you a newer supervisor at UCSB?  Are there professional development opportunities available at UCSB in support of your or your staff’s growth and career goals?  This workshop will provide a brief overview of professional, supervisory, management and leadership development programs for campus employees offered by UCSB Human Resources and in partnership with the Professional Development Center at Santa Barbara City College.  Information will also be shared regarding UC system-wide training programs.

In and Out of the Japanese Army
Sabine Frühstück

This will be a presentation on Professor Frühstück’s research on the Japanese Army as a Caucasian female scholar.  Such research has resulted in her book UNEASY WARRIORS: GENDER, MEMORY AND POPULAR CULTURE IN THE JAPANESE ARMY (University of California Press, 2007) and a Japanese translation FUAN NA HEISHITACHI: NIPPON NO JIEITAI KENKYU (Hara Shobo, 2008).

Come learn about and experience Mindfulness Based Stress-Reduction Meditation, a non-religious type of meditation developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  This is an excellent tool for stress management and improving health.

Preparation for Peak Performance: Using Rituals to Create Public Speaking Success- Lisa Braithwaite

Rituals are a part of all our lives, whether or not we’re aware of them.  However, successful speakers, athletes, actors, singers, writers and others who are in the spotlight on a daily basis consciously use preparation rituals to set the stage and prepare both mentally and physically for optimal performance.  This interactive workshop will help you discover your existing rituals and create new ones to improve confidence and performance for public speaking and other pursuits!

Retirement Strategies for Women
Jerry Chung

Women face different challenges than men do when planning for retirement.  Career gaps, part-time work, lower pay, and increased longevity are factors that make a difference in the amount of savings women are able to accumulate for retirement.  This workshop will provide practical tips and strategies to help you take charge of your financial future.

Sustainability at UCSB
Perrin Pellegrin

This workshop will provide an overview on UCSB efforts to “green” the campus.  The presentation will focus primarily on green building, green operations, and energy conservation.  It will touch on climate change and simple behavioral changes that can be used to reduce the campus’ environmental footprint.

Volunteerism:  Why Do They Do It?
Ruth Caldwell – Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Red Cross,
Pam Van Dyk – BEE LINE, and Virginia Johns - Soroptimist

In this workshop, a 3-member panel will provide individual presentations addressing their current volunteer work.  What drives them to donate their time to a non-profit agency?  Why do they keep going back year after year?  What benefits do they derive from such work?  What motivates such women to donate their limited time to their respective communities?  Come and find out!
